THE ARGUMENT IN BRIEF
Anil looks beyond automated buying to ask how agentic systems could change programmatic advertising by 2035. The piece explores future scenarios rather than presenting those outcomes as settled forecasts.
Programmatic’s Philosophical Destiny in the Age of Agentic AI

Programmatic advertising has always thrived on reinvention. From the early days of real-time bidding to the sophisticated omnichannel ecosystems we see today, the industry has continually evolved in response to technological advancements, regulatory changes, and shifting consumer behaviour.
But what lies ahead is not just another chapter in automation. It is a transformation so profound that it may reshape the very architecture of advertising itself. By 2035, programmatic is projected to become a $1.42 trillion marketplace, yet the bigger story isn’t scale - it’s consciousness.
Beyond Binary Thinking

For years, our industry has operated in binaries:
Open vs. closed.
Premium vs. programmatic.
Automation vs. human insight.
The next decade will dissolve these false choices. The future is not about taking sides—it is about convergence.
Imagine a landscape where a single campaign seamlessly spans CTV, YouTube, retail media, and digital out-of-home, managed not by fragmented systems but by AI-native orchestrators capable of learning, negotiating, and optimising in real time.
This is not theory—it is already beginning. DSPs are evolving into the central nervous systems of brands, predicting outcomes and arbitraging value across millions of bid requests per second. SSPs are no longer endpoints; they are becoming experience architects, curating premium, context-rich environments that command higher returns.
The idea of an “open internet” locked in battle with “walled gardens” will soon feel outdated. Instead, we will see the rise of a hybrid internet, where transparency, premium quality, and privacy-first collaboration flow across environments once thought incompatible.
The Rise of AI-Native Programmatic

The biggest catalyst for this shift is AI. Programmatic has always been data-driven, but with AI at scale, it becomes intent-driven.
Already, AI systems are:
Predicting conversion outcomes with 95% accuracy.
Enabling adaptive creative with thousands of real-time variations.
Negotiating media value autonomously.
And perhaps most significantly, users will no longer be passive recipients. Their AI agents- personalised digital extensions—will increasingly mediate consent, compare offers, and even negotiate value on their behalf. Programmatic will not just buy impressions—it will buy trust and focus.
Walled Gardens, Reinvented
For much of the past decade, walled gardens have been cast as the villains of digital advertising. But their reinvention into programmatic powerhouses tells a different story.
With billions of authenticated users and proprietary machine intelligence, these ecosystems are delivering results that the open internet struggles to match:
45% higher efficiency through unified data signals.
38% more accurate attribution via closed-loop measurement.
62% fraud reduction in authenticated environments.
Even more importantly, they have achieved what the industry has long aspired to: frictionless, invisible advertising. Campaign management feels effortless for brands, while users encounter only relevant, respectful, privacy-compliant experiences.
The lesson here is not that walled gardens will win, but that open ecosystems must evolve through clean rooms, federated AI, and interoperable measurement to compete on equal footing.
Measurement Beyond Attention

Clicks and impressions are relics. Even attention, the industry’s new darling, is only part of the story. In an AI-mediated future, we will need to measure something deeper: conscious engagement.
This means expanding measurement to include:
Attention intelligence → capturing cognitive load, emotional resonance, and multi-modal interaction.
Agentic actions → tracking how user AI agents recommend, share, or transact.
Consent as a metric → voluntary participation and sustained permission as proof of trust.
Holistic journey intelligence → measuring long-term brand equity, not just campaign lift.
Early experiments already show the power of this shift: campaigns optimised for attention yield 35% higher ROI and 67% stronger recall than those chasing impressions.
But tomorrow’s leaders will go further—measuring not just what people look at, but how they feel, trust, and act.
The Human Role: From Optimisers to Orchestrators

One of the great misconceptions about AI in advertising is that it will replace humans. In reality, it will elevate them.
The practitioners who thrive in 2035 will not be button-pushers. They will be strategic orchestrators—setting guardrails for AI, aligning campaigns with brand values, and ensuring that automation serves both performance and purpose.
Key skills will include:
AI governance → auditing and directing autonomous systems.
Privacy expertise → ensuring compliance and user empowerment.
Cross-channel orchestration → harmonising fragmented environments into coherent brand experiences.
Ethical leadership → embedding fairness and inclusivity into every decision.
Programmatic leaders will increasingly resemble conductors of an orchestra: the AI systems play the instruments, but humans set the tempo, emotion, and direction.
Emerging Frontiers

As if AI weren’t disruptive enough, several other breakthroughs are on the horizon:
Quantum computing: Optimisations once impossible will become instantaneous, enabling multi-objective auctions at scale.
Conscious AI systems: Capable not only of planning and optimising but of ideating original creative concepts with cultural empathy.
Ambient programmatic: Advertising woven into IoT, AR, and conversational interfaces, creating commerce that feels contextual rather than intrusive.
Decentralised ecosystems: Blockchain-based platforms offering tokenised value exchange, transparent attribution, and user-owned identities.
Each of these innovations points toward a future where programmatic isn’t just automated media - it is embedded into the fabric of digital life.
The Ethical Imperative

But with power comes responsibility. Programmatic’s future will only be sustainable if it evolves with ethics at its core.
The winners of tomorrow will not be those who simply master AI—they will be those who use it responsibly.
A Future Worth Building

The story of programmatic’s next decade is not just about technology. It is about choice.
The choice to build systems that respect users as much as they persuade them. The choice to pursue convergence rather than conflict. The choice to embed ethics into algorithms, not as an afterthought but as a design principle.
By 2035, programmatic advertising will be more intelligent, more ethical, and more valuable than ever. But the real revolution is not in the code—it is in the consciousness with which we build it.
The consciousness revolution has already begun. The only question is: will you adapt to it, or help lead it?
